Other Information and Services

First what do all classes offer?

  • Leading edge workplace and personal safety with a focus on verbal de-escalation training. We cover the realities of what society is facing today and how that effects our personal safety.
  • Simple yet effective means to control and calm your own emotions, this extends beyond work or your organization and can help outside “business” hours
  • Along with the above I like to get a chance to ask the organization considering my training, “what do you want out of it?” This can help me focus on the methodology that best applies to the needs of my client. My goal is to make this training work for you!
  • The ability to actively share and participate in the classes. Yes, I use power point. No, it is not death by power point. I welcome stories or questions by all attendees. Together our shared experiences can lead to productive learning environment, even for myself as the instructor. When time permits, I include simple short videos to help get some points across.
  • NW Crisis Training’s verbal de-escalation is based on 3 pillars (which are covered in all classes):
    • Calming oneself, thereby becoming a powerful still-point in chaotic situations
    • Effective Listening
    • De-Escalate before you try to solve the problem

Violence Prevention Walk-Through and Help in preparing Violence Prevention Policies and Procedures.

Utilizing years of experience I am happy to walk through your business or organizational and talk about security concerns. This can include:

  • Access policies for staff and clients
  • Physical organization of office space
  • Ideas for engaging volatile subjects in your workspace
  • How to effectively manage boundaries within in your organization

Organizations should strive to have a violence prevention policy or procedure in place to help employees understand how to be safe at work. This document should outline how to report an unsafe practice or violent incident. After an incident it is important to have procedure to review the chain of events leading up to the incident and this document sets guidelines for that review. Finally employees should know what resources are available and how to contact them after an incident occurs. We can offer suggestions, guidance or even prepare one for you depending on the needs of an organization. Contact us for more information.

Additional considerations for hosting a class

  • I am open to reasonable requests to tailor the basic classes further for your organization or needs of the intended audience. This can include shorter or longer (multiple day classes) classes with more focus on certain aspects of the training. If an organization wants me to hold a class for family members, we can talk about what parts of the training would be most beneficial to that audience.
    • This can include “Mock Scenes” if you want your employees to get a chance to practice. I don’t include these unless the organization requests it. I find attendees are more relaxed if they do not think they will be put “on the spot.”
  • The above can sometimes include organizational specific rules. I cover boundaries and how they are important, but we can expand on that with boundaries (rules) the organization feels are important to work into the training.
  • For either class a location must be selected that can comfortably accommodate the expected number of attendees and myself. Also, at a minimum, refreshments such as water and snacks should be available for the full day class. If the location must be rented the cost of that is the responsibility of the organization or will be billed with the invoice.
  • I need access to AV equipment, a large TV or projector with screen and some form of sound system. If these are not available, we can work out a solution if I am given enough notice and room to bring and set up my own gear.
  • Certificates of completion will be emailed out after the class is held, if requested. It is preferred that one point of contact is available to receive all the certificates for an organization. These can be printed and delivered for a small fee.
  • I endeavor to place the highest priority on your training. However, I work as a first responder and life happens. If I must cancel the training, there will be no fees charged and every attempt to reschedule as soon as possible will be made with your organization.
  • Communication of expectations is key, please, if you have a question ask.
  • Most of the material can be tailored. If you work with a shelter for domestic violence survivors, we can focus on helping them through their crisis. If you work as security at a hospital the material will focus on the healthcare setting.
  • Edgework founder Ellis Amdur has published over 13 organizational specific books. They range from working with law enforcement, security, clinical staff to jails or prisons and fire/EMS responders. There is a book the best fits your organization. If you are unsure simply ask.
  • Currently all class locations should be able to follow or exceed the recommended or mandated guidelines for in person teachings regarding COVID safety.
