Half-Day Class: Introduction to Edgework Methodology and Violence Prevention
This half-day course, approximately four hours in duration, serves as an introductory program to Edgework Methodology and violence prevention. The primary focus is on establishing a foundation of awareness and the three essential steps for achieving successful outcomes in crisis situations:
- Self-Calming: Becoming a steady, powerful presence in chaotic environments.
- Effective Listening and Communication: Engaging meaningfully with individuals in crisis.
- De-Escalation: Reducing chaos before attempting to problem-solve.
Course Overview
The class begins with an exploration of the nature of crises, including how to recognize when someone is in a crisis state. A proper intervention strategy cannot succeed without understanding the root causes of crises and their emotional impact on affected individuals. The training progresses to emphasize self-control, which is the first crucial step in the intervention process. By ensuring that participants are grounded and “available” to assist, they can subsequently focus on their physical presence and communication skills necessary for effective listening and engagement.
This session is designed to equip attendees with essential concepts and safety considerations when interacting with individuals in crisis. Participants will foster a deeper understanding of the emotional experiences faced by those in distress, thereby cultivating a sense of empathy that prioritizes safety without compromising the well-being of both the individual in crisis and the responder. While the class introduces techniques for managing specific crisis behaviors, such as anger and rage, these topics are explored in greater depth in the full-day course.
Target Audience
This class is ideal for individuals seeking core concepts that can enhance their everyday safety and de-escalation skills. Organizations aiming to provide a foundational understanding of crisis recognition and self-regulation for all employees are encouraged to inquire about arranging this training.
For those seeking more advanced techniques or who anticipate frequent interactions with individuals in crisis, the full-day class is recommended.
