Violence Prevention and Interacting with Volatile Subjects (Full Day)

The day long class (usually about 8 training hours) covers the material from the introduction class and greatly expands on the full spectrum of calming and controlling volatile subjects.

It starts with material from the half day class but we dive further into techniques specific to anger and rage states. We then cover interacting with those having substance or psychological disorders and the volatile nature of their behavior. One mistake other training makes is trying to “diagnose” the person before providing techniques to de-escalate them. In NW Crisis Training we do cover what these interactions can look like, but attendees are not being trained to diagnose. Their are many amazing professionals out there who can expertly diagnose a persons needs, over time. NW Crisis Training’s focus is to be safe at the moment we need it. We are training and preparing people for intervention and safety at a “moment in time”.

If a person focuses too much on the “why” and not enough and the “what” they miss opportunities to de-escalate and create a safe environment. NW Crisis Training teaches how to address the behavior that is presented, not the underlying cause. If a person is in a manic state an attendee needs to recognize the manic state, not worry if it is caused by Bi-Polar disorder, drugs, alcohol or a traumatic brain injury.

This class also offers much more time for in depth discussions with attendees and a chance to deep dive a few examples of individuals presenting with these volatile behaviors. We further increase the attendees ability to be aware of danger and work on how to utilize that awareness to prevent violence.

It comes with the flyer from the introduction class.

If possible or needed, an informal meeting and/or walk-through before training is requested to tailor the theme and suggestions to the workplace your employees work in. The methodology is the same but how and what you need can change based on your environment. I do not teach “police” tactics to someone working in a shelter or office setting, no more than I would teach social services methodology to those who work in a correctional facility. Further if an organization wishes the training to spend more time on one topic, like anger states, we can accomplish that as well.

It is highly recommended that all participants purchase the corresponding book. The need for the book is explained here https://edgeworkbooks.com/creating-a-culture-of-safety/

In that link you will find additional links to purchase the books in hardback, paperback, and E-reader version available.

If your agency wishes to purchase books directly for your staff, something I strongly recommend, I can help coordinate that directly with Edgework books. I can also, with prearrangement, bring the books to class.
